How I Met
Your Mother
'P.S. I
Love You' Review
Robin
Sparkles is back y'all!
After a small
break for a week, HIMYM has returned for another great
episode, but still had the potential to be even greater with its initial set
up.
The episode began
with Ted explaining destiny and that if relationships are meant to be they will
somehow find each other again at some point in the future. Although it was
still clear that this was by no means a meeting with the future mother, I was
hyped up because Ted was returning back to his old romantic side, which we all
loved in the original series. Unfortunately this endeavour was not the main
focus but instead drastically diverted attention to Robin and of course her
alter-ego Robin Sparkles.
Although a little
bit disappointed with this change, the entire shenanigans surrounding Robin
Sparkles was brilliantly delivered. For the first time in a while every
characters stories tied into the same overall plot focus of Doppler-Dahmer,
whether or not a gesture seems spontaneously romantic or absolutely
terrifying. It worked well in identifying what Ted's latest fling will end up
becoming. But even better was that it was a great device for Marshall and Lily,
as they still learnt truths about how their relationship began.
As for Barney he
played the familiar role of becoming excessively obsessed. Knowing Barney's
typical behaviour it was funny witnessing him jet around trying to find out the
truth of events, followed by his terribly funny arrogance towards Canadians. It
was also nice to see a large amount of guest stars for this including James Van
Der Beek and Alan Thicke and they played their Canadian roles well.
Moving on to the
major player of this episode, Robin, her crazy portrayal of Robin Sparkles was
executed brilliantly too. It was very smart of Carter Bays and Craig Thomas
to show a behind the scenes of Robin Sparkles with a
"documentary" which clearly parodied the ones you see on the likes of
MTV and VH1. Although it was very tongue in cheek, with some funny references
to Canadian people's politeness etc. It was so well done I almost feel like I
was watching one of those horrendous documentaries. So kudos Bays/Thomas for
adding that element into the show.
Furthermore Cobie Smulders performed another brilliant music video
as Sparkles, although unfortunately this looks like the end of the saga for
her.
Although I
was expecting the episode to go for a more grounded route, based on its first
few moments, which suddenly switched to a more silly format, P.S. I Love You was still a great episode to watch.
Everyone loves a bit of Robin Sparkles!
It would
have been nice if Teds new fling, Jeanette was a bit more developed, there was
a serious lack of airtime with her. But I am sure she will make a return
appearance. Last but not least there were some interesting final words
from Ted. I may have possibly read too much into it, but if true it is
definitely satisfying for the fans.
8/10
