How I Met
Your Mother
'Time Travelers'
Review
What began
as a fairly mediocre plot transformed into something great
Last week's
episode, although fun, had quite a lot to be desired in terms of developing the
main story arc which, as we all know, has ran for the last eight seasons, how
Ted meets his future wife.
Luckily this
episode did push it further just enough for some satisfaction from HIMYM fans.
Rather like
my preconceptions of Weekend at Barney's, I immediately assumed the worst about
this episode, basing it solely on its promo picture. Admittedly there were some
drab moments with the plot device but ultimately it paid off in the end.
Main
emphasis was placed on Ted Mosby (yay) who is offered tickets to the
traditional "Robots Vs Wrestlers" by Barney, by which he contemplates
whether or not to go. Queue in the future renditions of Ted and Barney trying
to sway his opinion.
There were
some funny moments with this setup, a particular favourite being Barney's
insistence on a scalp check. But apart from that the jokes fell relatively
flat, some bordering on a little pointless at times.
As for the
remainder of the cast, Marshall and Robin were pitted together in a battle
at the bar. Although it started off a little stale, it eventually grew to be a
whole lot funnier as it progressed.
Marshall's
confrontation with barman Carl was a nice touch as he has also been a part of
the show for its entirety, followed by Marshall's "are you Zuckerburging
me" line to Robin which was delivered with such savvy it made me chuckle.
unfortunately
for Lily though she had no real impact in this episode and the B story except
for a nostalgic remark about Marshall's dancers hip and a token of her support
towards the end.
Now we
return to Ted for the interesting part.
The whole
time traveler's situation resulted in a fantastic turn of events which lightly
involved a past fling from season 1 and a haunting realisation for Ted himself,
which I completely did not see coming. It was both upsetting yet uplifting at
the same time as it edged ever so much closer to the moment we are all waiting
for.
It has
to be noted, if it weren't for the twist, the whole future Barney and
Ted scenario was pretty outlandish and incomprehensible. it was not as if
Barney and Ted were outrageously drunk or anything. But of course the writers
knew what they were doing.
Although the
final moments for Ted was absolutely fantastic, I am no doubt sure that fans
may be annoyed about the anticipation. I myself was yelling at the screen 'turn
the camera around!' but that is all the fun of HIMYM, with so much mystery
surrounding a woman we actually know a lot about.
Although it
started off pretty mediocre, by the middle half all the way through to the end
this episode had evolved into a classic HIMYM plot for Ted. It was great to see
him take the position of "serious Ted" rather than the ditzy one we
have recently witnessed and although technically nothing actually happened, it
was extremely enjoyable.
8.4/10
